Transformation Meditations: 6. Different Ministrations
Isa 61:1b He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners
Before we move on we need to observe the words that I have put in bold in the verse above: “bind up” and “proclaim”. One is a present action thing – to bind up – and the other is a words declaration thing about something that has already happened. Let’s consider this in more detail.
First, Jesus, the Messiah of Isa 61, has been sent to carry out a restorative process. It is to bind up a broken heart. When something is broken it needs mending and so often that process requires the broken article, or maybe part our body, to be bound up to give it time for glue to set or healing to take place. A plaster cast is a form of this. If your heart has been broken you need binding up, you need some ministration that will – if we imagine it as a broken organ – hold the two parts together to give time for healing to come about. Healing of a broken heart takes time and it needs support, so the natural process of healing can take place.
God’s presence within you (the Holy Spirit) is the life force that will slowly, gently and gradually restore you. But you need bandages, something that will hold you firm and in spiritual terms it is the truth: God loves you, is there for you and is working to restore you. These ‘bandages’ are love and encouragement and support and affirmation and you need to receive those from other members of the body of Christ. For that to happen you need to find someone with whom you can share securely what you feel, someone who will be there for you, who will understand, and will encourage and stick with you.
But second, Jesus comes to proclaim what HAS happened as a result of his work on the Cross. There is nothing left that can keep you a prisoner, you are free to walk out the new life. In study no. 4 we said that the first place we can be captives is in our head and so we must pay attention to what we believe and adjust our thinking if necessary. If we still believe the lies that have been spoken over us, or we still hold onto guilt or fear that the enemy keeps hanging over us, we need to listen to the Messiah, I HAVE set you free, I have paid for your sins, I have taken your guilt and shame, I am with you and for you, so you no longer need fear, you are my child so you can know you ARE someone special.
Can you see this? It has already been done; there is no need for you to feel a prisoner any longer, you have been set free by what Jesus did on the Cross: “Think of it! All sins forgiven, the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant cancelled and nailed to Christ’s cross.” (Col 2:14 Msg) Reject the lies that have been spoken over you, declare the truth of who you are, a child of God, loved, forgiven, justified and glorified, and know that He IS here for you now, today, and loves you – utterly! “So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chosen? Who would dare even to point a finger?” (Rom 8:31- Msg) Believe it. live it, be yourself the person God designed you to be (Eph 2:10), child of God, not what someone else wants to try to make you be! The Messiah says you ARE free, so go for it!
