Wonder of God Meditations 20: Why God heals
2 Kings 5:15 “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel.”
You might have found some of my suggestions about my past, that drifts into the present, somewhat unnerving. It is easy to say we are sinners redeemed, but to be totally honest about the depths of our past failures, sins, weaknesses, call them what you will, requires both revelation and a great sense of security in God’s love. Many of us operate on the language found in computing – “if – then”. If I do this, then God will do that, but it doesn’t work like that. It is not automatic, God crashes our intellectual and logic barriers and comes crashing (oh so quietly sometimes) into our lives with His love, mercy and grace, that we simply can’t believe it can be that good.
I came across an anniversary tag and produced a wedding anniversary card for my wife recently, “It took 48 years for it to become this good”. But I’ve also had another birthday last month, my fifty-fifth new-birth anniversary. When it first happened there was that glorious honeymoon period with the Lord living on cloud nine, and then we settled in for the long haul. Now I’m like that one the psalmist refers to: “The righteous … will flourish in the courts of our God… They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, “The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.” (Psa 92:12-15) The years have proved the truth of this.
Naaman has just understood this: “Now I know that there is no God in all the world except in Israel.” Yes, that was his testimony. He had encountered the impossible. Leprosy can’t be healed, but he was! He hadn’t believed in Israel’s God, but now he does. He is just starting off on what is likely to be a difficult life but one where he has a new awareness – God IS, God is there for him!
Why did God heal Naaman, why did Jesus heal thousands? Because “God is love” (1 Jn 4:8,16) and God wants to bless us so that we can believe in Him, learn to trust in Him more and more, and become faith people who can walk on water when he says, “Come.” (My 14:29) Every time God turns up for you, it is to bless you and encourage you. It may be in the middle of a storm (Mt 14:24,25), it may be in a place of isolation (Jn 4:6) and it will probably be unexpected – but it won’t be because you deserve it but simply because He loves you! This new life of blessing starts at that ‘new birth’ when we first surrendered to Him, convicted and confessing and receiving forgiveness, adoption, a new Spirit empowered and directed life. We didn’t deserve it, we didn’t earn it, God just came and faced us with the truth and when we faced it – He changed us! Mercy and Grace!!!
